Field Data Being Wiped After/During Close

We support an application which stores client doc’s (cases) that are updated regularly. From time to time users report that most of the information is lost on a particular case. I believe this is not user error - they did not intentionally delete the info. I don’t think it is a bug in processing code in form events or script libraries called. Fields cleared are all editable fields, although not all editable fields are cleared. Fields cleared are the most commonly referenced fields … the fields most likely to be searched on … I noticed problems with the $Highlights field on earlier versions … wondering if that might have anything to do with it. Any ideas?
