External mail problems, external mail problems driving me nuts!

Does anyone know of any exhaustive troubleshooting guide for external mail issues. that seems to be all I am getting these days.

1st: I am able to send to an external email from another external email address like yahoo. Won’t work from within the network. Keep getting a deliver failure message. I ran a mail trace and looked at the headers and I see the mail bouncing around ESMTP relays then comming back to an internal IP stating the message is undeliverable. But that is all.

2nd: it is taking a long time (3 days) for internal mail recipients to get external mail but ok internally. I looked on the server logs and mail seemed to be routing fine. Any suggestions?

Could be a whole range of things. You could do worse that work your way through the Admin help section on configuring you mail environment.

It sounds as if a good point to start would be to check DNS and TCPIP.

The Fully Qualified host name on the server document should be correct and should match the MX record for your organisation on the server that routes mail externally. In addition, you should be able to ping the server’s DNS name from itself - if you can’t then use a hosts file entry to remedy this.

Also check the address used on the Notes Port section. Again , you should be able to ping it from the server and it should either be a valid IP address or DNS name.

Do you route mail externally yourself or via an ISP or some other relay?

Which servers are running SMTP and which are using Notes mail routing?

Then you need to look at domain documents (forgeign/foreign SMTP/global), connection documents (of type SMTP connection) and also Domino Named Networks, configuration documents and the server document. All of these can contribute to the issue.
