External emails not been received/sent

I have just “inherited” the IT support of a small company here in Manchester England. Their original IT person has moved to Australia.

They have TWO domino 6.0.3 servers both running on windows 2000 servers. The first (the main one) handles nearly everything. The second one (secondary) handles EXTERNAL emails and passes them to and from the main server. There is spam protection on the secondary server.

Around October 14th the staff stopped being able to send or receive external emails. Internal ones are fine. I was there for a couple of hours on Friday 27th and it looks very much like the two servers are not passing emails between each other properly. ie I can see loads of pop/smtp type activity on the secondary server.

Ive looked through the (windows 2000) event viewer of both servers and cant see anything that happened on or around the 14th october. Internet access through their DSL router seems fine. Their network seems fine. So it looks to me like one (or both) of the domino server programs has malfunctioned.

It has been quite a while since i looked at domino servers.

Where should I start ?

ie is there a fault log file that I can check out ?

Apologies if this seems like a very basic query.

I shall be back there at 1pm (uk time) 30th october.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

PS their company has been subjected to D.O.S. attacks in the past but I dont think this has any relevance.

Was either of the servers restarted? Possibly a service wasn’t restarted?

Is the mail travelling from the primary to the secondary via the Router or SMTP?

You should be able to open log.nsf (the server log)

If yo don’t have the Admin client installed it’s much easier to navigate the servers/logs.
