Error #02:08 when opening mail on 8.5 server with 6.0.3 client

Users with 6.0.3 client are unable to open some emails when the mail file has been updated to 8.5 ODS with document compression enabled (error pasted below). The error is as below. I’ve tried running fixup -F -J and compact -C -R with no luck. Also tried creating a local replica using the 6.0.3 client with no luck. The emails in question open without issue using an 8.0 and 8.5 client.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

OK

Subject: Is the attachment LZ1 compressed?

We had this happen with a user who was using Lotus Notes 7.0.2 on an 8.5.1 Domino server. The attachment was LZ1 compressed.

I upgraded her to Lotus 7.0.4, and she was able to open the attachment.

Subject: What is the template being used for the mail file?

Please also provide a copy of the mail database with the problematic doc(s) pasted in it (without encryption on mail db).

We’ll investigate. Thanks for reporting.

Subject: Template version is the standard Mail 656

Also tried using a v7 and a v8.5 template, but the same error occurs. If I open the message in question in a 8.5 client, put it in edit mode, then do a save and close, then I can open the message with the 6.0.3 client. The only item that seems to be changing is the $File(s) and I am wondering if it is related to MIME formatting/data within the message. I will open a PMR as well as suggested.

Subject: Looks like an issue - can a PMR be open in parallel please.

Subject: This may be old news, but I’ll add this because this is the only thread with the #02:08 error

Refer to this technote:Title: Supported configurations for Notes and Domino 8.5
Doc #: 1358406
URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=899&uid=swg21358406

This error is just a side-effect of running an earlier Notes client with a later mail template design and ODS.

The error means a small portion or piece of the document cannot be opened. In most cases, the user can click OK and get on with life. This should be temporary until the user’s client can be upgraded to match the server and mail db versions.

There are libraries that are used in the template code that take advantage of the dlls local to the client, if the script can’t use the dlls you are going to run into issues, and one of them is this error.

IBM recommends upgrading the server first, then the clients, then the mail databases in that order to avoid these issues. IBM/Lotus Development is not going to add any fixes to issues that arise from using an R6 or R7 client with an R8.5 ODS and design mail database. It says so in that technote.

There is an SPR requesting a better error code than #02:08. That SPR is OAGU7TGTDR.
