We have tried enabling the Blacklists option in the Domino Adminstrator. We enabled a test with SpamHaus that came back informing us that the connection could not be verified since our Domino server sits behind a firewall. We were also going to purchase SpamEraser product but it also goes out to the Internet to retrieve the blacklist and that option will not work either. Has anyone found a solution to get around this? Would subscribing to a blacklist be a workaround? And if so, how does a subscriber blacklist work?
Subject: Enabling Blacklists with Server behind Firewall
Got to be your firewall. My guess is that your Domino server is going through a separate SMTP box and only the SMTP box has rights to “go out” to the internet. If that’s the case, (big guess) if your SMTP box is running Domino, you could enable blacklist lookup on that box instead of your main mail server. If you are not running SMTP through a separate box, then it’s sounds like purely a firewall issue blocking your mail server from getting to the blacklist server. (unfortunately, I don’t know which TCP/IP “port” that uses).
We have used both sbl.spamhaus.org and bl.spamcop.net. The latter seems to stop more (e.g., is more restrictive) but I had a case yesterday where it was blocking a legitimate customer and had to switch to spamhaus to allow their mail in. The customer later was able to get removed from the spamcop list.
