Email sent from traveler on iPhone goes to everyone of that name in corporate directory

One user (Jane) sent an email to the following internet email address: “Anne Broadbent anne.broadbent@gmail.com” [1]. That is the exact format of the address as sent, and that is what is in the SendTo field of the saved sent email.

And, cc’ed a fellow co worker (Mary) who picked up the message on her iPhone using Notes traveler.

That co worker who was cc’ed (Mary) then hit reply all on her iPhone, replying to the co-worker sender (Jane) and cc’ing Anne Baxter. It’s hard to make out exactly what the iPhone thinks it’s seeing, as it only shows anne.baxter123@gmail.com when you press down on the blue email address circle in the cc line, but in the Notes client when you hit reply to all you get this exact format in the cc line: Anne Broadbent anne.broadbent@gmail.com (note no quotes anywhere.)

Anyway, that innocent quick reply went to every Anne in the company directory on the Domino mailserver.

What gives? I have never seen this happen ever in 23 years of administering notes. If anything, I would have expected “duplicate Annes found not sent etc etc.”
