Email group expanded, but message lost on route to smart host

We’re haveing a very strange routing issue that doesn’t report any errors.

Email addressed to a specific group (i.e. group@domain.com) is accepted by the internet server but not relayed via SMTP smart host to the target mail server. No errors are logged, and most messages (even to other groups) are relayed without any problems (logging level = informative).

When using message tracking on the ‘lost’ messages on the originating server, it reports the delivery status = “Group Expanded” (should be “Transferred”) and next server = “None” (Should be “[xx.xx.xx.xx]” - IP of smart host). The message is not found when using message tracking on the desination server.

We’ve most recently turned on DNS Blacklisting, but the servers delivering the mail in question are able to connect and deliver the message.

There are no rules active. (the only rule was a move to a graveyard mail db if domain = spammer)

We upgraded from R5 to R602CF1, although we started noticing the issue a few weeks after upgrading (unsure of relation).

The origin and target servers are all in the same Internet & Notes Domain.

We DO have a directory catalog that is compiled from the destination server (smart host) that doesn’t have the members field (so group names stay as groups for recipients). But it is configured to always use the smart host for all incomming traffic and is NOT configured to use the dir-assist anywhere. The originating server also compiles it’s own directory assistance database, but is not told to use it for addressing.

The target server is never contacted by the originating server for the messages addressed to groups that dont exist in the originating server’s NAB. (No message like “Router: Message [Number] delivered for [string]…”) If the message has an individual (non-group) or a group that exists in the originating server’s NAB, it is delivered as expected, but only to the individuals listed.

The problem seems to be with the group expansion not being able to complete. I isn’t configured to use the directory assistance db (without members field). I would expect the server to NOT expand group names until AFTER it is relayed to the smart host (as it has been doing for years in R5).

I’ve stopped the router and confirmed that the messages arrive in the mail.box. But as soon as I start the router task, the message dissapears from the mail.box, nothing logged, and no connection to the smart host.

So routing guru, what should I do now?

Issue resolved. (FYI - reply to self)

The setting I was looking for was in the Server Document’s Basic Tab, “Allow this directory to be used as a remote primary directory for other servers:” with Yes checked. This caused the directory assistance db’s to be used for resolving names. Unchecking the setting for all servers and restarting the router caused the smart host to work like it did in R5 - resolve names at the smart host.
