Can anyone categorically tell me that Lotus Notes does not support the concept of a self contained email file like the outlook .eml or .msg files. Such files can be stored outside of the notes environment and when opened by notes contain the complete email as saved. Including To, From, Subject, body text & attachements etc. The Email can of course be deleted from the notes system once it is stored outside in this self contained form.

Sure, I will. That’s not to say that you can’t move messages off of the server (look at Archiving, and cut-n-paste into another database works as well), or create standalone files (there is code to create RTFs and/or PDFs floating around out there), but Notes email documents (all Notes documents, for that matter) are fundamentally database records, and without the Form and other code the database provides, they are meaningless.

How is that different from a local replica of the mail database? It’s an ordinary file as far as the OS is concerned. You can make copies or backups or move it to another computer. Assuming the permissions and encryption are set to allow it you can open any copy of the file with any copy of Notes.
