How can I force the application to become unavailable if the session has timed out? Or, how could I pop up a message to the user if the agent fails due to a timed out session? I need some way to alert the user to the fact that they are no longer logged in so their changes are not being saved.
Any ideas are appreciated.

I think ur using xmlhttp to update document in the lotus notes, after updating document you might getting some response msg from your lotus notes agent.
If seesion timeout you might getting different error message from your lotus notes agent. “Like session out” you will get big size html file , based on that you can pop-up error msg to users or you can pop-up users to relogin.
I have designed this on 2004.
