Dynamic indexing of high usage views - auto-disabling over time?

Domino/Notes Version: 14.5.1
Operating System: Windows Server 2022
Client (Notes, Nomad Web, Nomad Mobile, Android/iOS, browser version): N/A

Anybody using this feature and noticed it stopping after a period of time?

We’ve had NIF_VIEW_USAGE_ENABLED=1 in our Notes.INI for sometime, and can see high-usage views cycling in and out of the task manager when the server is running.

However, after the server has been running for a few days/weeks, we’ve noticed this feature seems to stop without warning. This anomaly seems consistent on all of our servers.

Here’s the stats from one of our servers, with the bold line highlighting the stoppage:

> show stat database.viewusage.*

Database.ViewUsage.Calls = 464477
Database.ViewUsage.HighUsageCurrent = 0
Database.ViewUsage.HighUsageDisables = 1559
Database.ViewUsage.HighUsageEnables = 3328
Database.ViewUsage.HighUsageUpdateChecks = 519574
Database.ViewUsage.HighUsageUpdates = 167700
Database.ViewUsage.Skipped = 12
7 statistics found

As soon as you launch a new Indexer (update) task, or recycle the server, the high-usage views recommence, only to stop again some time later.

Is this intended behaviour? If so, I can’t find any reference to it in the Admin docs.

I encountered this same issue with a client some time ago and created program documents that re-trigger the indexing of important views twice a day.

Hi @tyrex1975 ,

As per info, the Dynamic Indexing of High-Usage Views feature (NIF_VIEW_USAGE_ENABLED=1) does not permanently designate views as “high usage”. When there is no update or in idle period, the Database.ViewUsage.HighUsageCurrent will drop to 0.

Per @MarcelRothuizen mentioned, creating a program document will re-trigger the indexing of important views and will refresh the value of Database.ViewUsage.HighUsageCurrent.

You may check this documentation for more information.
Monitoring dynamic indexing of high-usage views

In the event that you are having an issue or need more clarifications, you can create a case to HCL Domino Support Portal for a deep dive investigation.

Hope the above information helps. Thank you.

Eugene Pagtabunan

It seems odd that high-availability servers like the ones I am running would designate views as idle or requiring no update over time. My servers are running with very high web traffic 24/7, so I would expect a rotation of high usage views, but not a complete termination.

I will raise a case with HCL because I think something is not right here.

Thanks!
