Dying Server

Folks,

This has probably been covered before but I can’t find it here!

Background:

Old server migrated from Win2K box with a pre-existing errors, and now has more! Additionally we are due to upgrade to 7.x at some stage early in the new year. I would prefer to do this with a good copy of Domino 6.5.x than the corrupted one I have.

Line of thought to fix this up:

Install fresh domino server on a new partition on the new box.

Issues:

1/ server names - due to the extended notes network for our organistation we would prefer to keep the server names/ou’s the same - is this possible noting we will be loading the servers on the same physical machine?

2/ user mail files - will the adminP process work for domino servers located on the same physical box with the same name?

3/ how do I move the hosted web site (external facing) from one server to another?

Subject: new server names were unavoidable.

Do you plan an overlap period wherein both old and new servers will work? All databases from old servers got to replicate to corresponding new servers.

How will you have two Domino servers on one machine at a time? Adding a new disk/partition etc?

What about network card/IP address/HTTP port/other standard ports of your machine? Will this go to Old or New domino server?

In the organisations which I know, when there was big scale server movement/hardware upgrade, new server names were unavoidable.

Subject: RE: new server names were unavoidable.

Byju,

Thanks for the reply. Yes we do intend an overlap period as we transfer from one to the other. I thought it would be the case that I would have to use a different name for the new server, but wanted to confirm with those that have more knowledge than I do. What I intended to do to get around the physical limitations was to port the old server into a VMWare virtual server, then run up the new server on the physical equipment. Once everything had replicated between the two and everything was working again, I intended to shut down the virtual machine to release resources back into the system and to allow my backup agent to work without extra licenses.
