DXL Export Ascii data and en dash, em dash

I am exporting lotus notes documents with the DXLExportNote method. These documents contain a rich text field into which I’ve pasted the following 6 characters from a MS Word or Notepad document. The characters are know as en dash, em dash, left single quote, right single quote, left double quote and right double quote.

When the DXLWrite function receives Ascii data it is always called with a single character for processing. When the DXLWrite function recieves one of these 6 characters, then it receives them as a 3 character sequence of the format in hex: E280193 or E28094 or E28098 or E28099 or E2809C or E2809D.

Also, I receive some 2 character sequences of hex: C2AD.

I am wondering 1) What these are sequences? UNICODE? 2) How are they interpreted or constructed 3) Where is this documented?

thanks
