Dual Processor or more RAM? Suggestions

Hello All,I am getting ready to buy a new Server for our email system. And I am trying to decide which would be the best bang for the buck?

Windows 2003 Server - 350 users.

I could go:

  • Dual Processor 3Ghz. with 2gb RAM

or

-Single Processor 3.4 Ghz. with 3gb RAM

Does Windows 2003 and Notes 6.5.4 take good use of an extra processor or am I better off beefing up the RAM?

Domino does make good use of two processors, especially if you run multiple mail routing boxes, multiple replicators (assuming you have more than one server) and multiple indexers (one each per CPU).

I’d go with dual processors. RAM is pretty cheap, and can be added later. Make sure you get your server with open memory slots, though.

Domino on Wintel won’t make use of more than 2GB of RAM, so you’re much better off with the additional processor.

Make sure you’re puttng as much emphasis on your disk systsem as you are on CPU and memory. This is of particular concern if you’re doing transaction logging.
