Hi.
What i am interested in knowing if people can give me some idea, is the throughput rates of peoples migrations from Domino into Exchange.
The history here is that we have a large number of mail & archive files (approx 2TB) and need to estimate how long migrating these into an Exchange 2007 system might take…
I know its one of those ‘how long is a piece of string’ questions, but if we can have any idea - its better than no idea - what i would like is something like “we took X hours to migrate a users 2gb mail and calendar into exchange using a single migration server”.
Any help would be most appreciated (oh and for the record my recommendation was to upgrade to notes rather than migrate but the higher up decision has already been made!)
We are currently running Notes 6.5 clients with 8.0.2 mail servers and 8.5.1 Admin server - all the servers are VMWare servers.
The exchange environment is a Exchange 2007 ssytem with abotu 6-7 servers in the cluster - these are all ‘real’ servers not VM’s

Hi Ian,
Sorry to hear that you are migrating to exchange.
I have done some migrations last year. The speed is very depending on the environment and the tools you are using.
Lately I did a migration with Transend Migrator of a small environment and the speed was then about 3 GB/Hour. The environment was quite poor, a very old server and a 100 Mbit network. Another migration I did I got about 4-8 GB/Hour, on my laptop I only managed 1 GB/hour.
You have to keep in mind that the speed is depending on the network speed, server performance (both Exchange and Domino), conversion machine performance (could be done on a server with a Notes client on it to save network trafic).
Keep in mind that it is never an easy thing and needs to be well prepared.
Be wise with the choice of the tools you are going to use. My advice is not to use the Microsoft Migration tools. If you get it working, the migration is very unreliable.
Some tools that are fine are CMT of BinaryTree and Transend Migrator of Transend.

Peter

Hi Peter
Thanks for the response - yeah you are not the only one who is sorry this is happening
Indeed i am aware it is very dependant on the tools / environment etc, but just wanted to get a feeling if the 2gb/hr we are currently getting is about average…
We are using the Quest “Notes Migrator for Exchange” tools which do seem very good at what they do.
The environment is/should be pretty good - all the Domino servers and Migration servers are dual CPU (3ghz) machines with a min of 4gb RAM and shed loads of disc space, each with 2 X 1Gb NIC’s…the Exchange system is of similar spec as well from what we understand (we have no control / very limited access to it!)
We have been working on this for about about 7 months now already and haven’t migrated anyone as yet -lots of planning and testing etc been going on!
Thanks again
Ian
