Domino shuts down when a load compact -a runs against mail

Implemented a document retention policy to delete all mail older than one year. Three mail servers, ran load compact -a mail manually. All three servers got through the C’s or so and then Domino shut down cleanly. It did not crash, so no NSD was generated. Windows doesn’t indicate a problem in event viewer. The Notes log doesn’t report anything, just lists the last file it tried to archive.

If it was just one server, I could suspect a corrupt mail file or view or document, but the exact same thing happened on three separate servers. I tried it three times and it never failed on the same mail file.

I then tried compact -A, to delete mail without compacting the DB, and it got farther, but then also failed the same way, with a clean Domino shutdown.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’ve searched the forum and found instances of server crashes and the archive command hanging or doing nothing, but nothing referencing a clean shutdown. I dread opening a ticket with Lotus, because I have no server error logs to send them, and that means I will get nowhere with them.

Any advice or info would be appreciated.

You might try running ncompact.exe from the Command Prompt. You can do this with the server NOT running.

Lawrence, thanks, that would work if I didn’t need the archive switch to run against the mail files to remove documents. Can you establish that switch from the command line?

You can use the switches from the command prompt.

Maybe there are problems with the databases. Did you run fixup on them?

It is probably due to partially populated Archive Profile…

I suppose u will be getting on different mail files all the time.

If so ,u need to delete profile set.
