Domino R6 server compression

If I enable compression on a Domino R6.01 server, will it be able to communicate to other R6 servers not running compression (so they can talk to R5 servers)? Do all servers need to have compression enabled in order to communicate or will an R6 server be “smart” enough to “do” compression when needed and disable it when it doesn’t? What about R5 servers - will they be able to communicate with the compression-enabled R6 server? The reason I ask is that we still have a mix of R5 and R6 servers with two R6 servers clustered (over a WAN) - we want these two servers to talk via compression, but since we have R5 servers “touching” these R6 servers, we were told that we cannot enable compression at all. Thanks, Michael

Subject: You’re OK – compression only used when appropriate

Enabling compression is something like teaching Domino 6 another language, in that the server doesn’t forget those that it already knew. Domino 6 servers with compression enabled can exchange both compressed network data with other similarly-configured Domino 6 servers, and uncompressed/standard data with R4 and R5 servers, as well as Domino 6 servers which do not have compression enabled.
