Domino on WinXP

Like many people I’ve been using any old Win32 platform as a test machine. Win95 thru NT4 to current times.

Just a quick tip-off not to use Windows XP for a domino server. It’s not supported and appears to cause a few problems and clash with 3rd party tools like GroupShield. You’re best off using another platform.

Well, it’s clear from the Release Notes that Windows XP is not one of the supported platforms for running Domino server.

Based on other posting I keep a second copy of my notes.ini and copy it over the ‘live’ one before starting domino locally. Pid.nbf kept being a problem so I delete it as well be starting the domino server.e.g. in a bat file…

del c:\lotus\domino\notes.ini

copy c:\lotus\domino\goodnotes.ini c:\lotus\domino\notes.ini

del c:\lotus\domino\data\pid.nbf

pause

c:\lotus\domino\nserver.exe

Runinng Domino on Windows XP ? Why not…It runs without issues…

But why would you like to run a server program on an operating system that is designed to be used as a desktop operating system, not as a server ?

For development or testing environments, where only few users access the Domino server, there should be no problem running Domino on Windows XP. Otherwise I would use a server version of Windows or Linux, etc.

If you need to restart the Domino server, consider rebooting the workstation instead. This does not mean that restarting only the Domino server would cause trouble.

From my personal experience, I had no trouble restarting only the Domino 6 server on my Windows XP Home Edition PC. I run the server in the background and use other applications in the foreground. After restarting only the Domino server, the applications ran somehow slower sometimes. Groupshield did not throw any error message, even after restarting only the Domino server.

Also tried domino 6.01 by itself and with cf1 update on xp with all latest service packs also.Result is simply it doesnt work well if not at all on xp platform, it will work maybe once or twice but if you restart domino, you will start receiving error message like cant find names.nsf and alot others, windows 2000 I have to admit has run all my test 6.01 servers with no problem so far.

I use Windows XP Home Edition for hosting my Domino 6.01 CF1 server and I have had no major problems yet. In the beginning I had once or twice mesages like “Directory Assistance failed opening Primary Domino Directory names.nsf, error: File does not exist” but now my development environment is running quit stable. I also used Windows 2000 Professional for running Domino 5 & 6 servers and had no problems.

For a production server I wouldn’t use a Windows client like Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional. I would use a server edition of Windows or Linux (or one of the other platforms).
