Domino Hot Backup

Hello All,

Quick questions regarding backing up the Domino Server database files:

  1. Can these files be backed up with something like Retrospect Backup (an “open file” type of backup scheme)? Will they be corrupted during this process? In particular I am wondering about the backup service running on this: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/ss4200-e/index.htm

  2. Does Domino have a feature to create a hot backup (i.e. a backup that can be created while the server software is running and that can be pulled out at any time and be restored from)?

2.a. If so (to #2), does Domino have the ability to encrypt such a hot backup?

2.b. If not (to #1 AND #2), what software do you recommend to backup server files in a relatively continuous fashion (consider one hour loss equals $5,000 loss to this small business), WITHOUT shutting down the Domino service?

Cheers,

fogus

Subject: Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail

I suggest looking at Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail… handles backup and recovery of Domino transaction logs. It is not the only solution (also check the Veritas = for Domino). You will receive errors in your backup program’s log with open databases. These products cost $$$ that a lot of smaller businesses cannot afford. I know some smaller customers that will schedule a Domino shutdown then perform the backup (then restart the server). In some cases, this is not acceptable. If it is not acceptable, I would look at the above.

IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager for Mail protects data on e-mail servers running Lotus® Domino® or Microsoft® Exchange

This software module for Tivoli Storage Manager automates data protection, enables “hot” backups without shutting down the server and improves data restore performance.

Utilizes the application program interfaces (APIs) provided by e-mail application vendors to perform online “hot” backups and improve restores without shutting down the e-mail server

Helps protect the growing amount of new and changing data that should be securely backed up to help maintain 24x365 application availability

Exploits the “transaction logging” feature of Domino, enabling the capture of just the database changes for logged databases, thus resulting in less-frequent full backups

Uses the backup APIs provided by Microsoft to create a copy of the Exchange server storage group databases along with the associated transaction logs

Can produce the different types of backups specified by Microsoft backup APIs: Full Backups, Incremental Backups, Differential Backups, Copy Backups and Database Copy Backups

Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange 2007 on Windows x86_64.

Operating systems supported: AIX, i family, Linux, Windows, z/OS
