Domino Domain Monitoring (DDM) Survey

The Domino Admin team is collecting information on the usage of Domino Domain Monitoring (aka DDM) by our customers. Please take a moment to answer the following two questions to help us improve the usefulness of this feature for you:

  1. How would you characterize your use of DDM?

A. What’s DDM?

B. I tried it but don’t really use it.

C. I use it occasionally.

D. I use it all the time and rely on it to help keep my domain running smoothly.

  1. What improvements to DDM would provide the most value to you? Please pick your top 3:

A. Make it easier to get notified of DDM events via mail, pager, etc.

B. Make probe configuration easier and more intuitive.

C. Make it easier to filter out uninteresting DDM reports.

D. Improve the workflow for DDM events (e.g., assigning owners, tracking changes made, etc.)

E. Make it possible to assign a priority to DDM events and then view & filter them based on priority.

F. Automate the corrective actions, allowing DDM to automatically fix problems when they are detected.

G. Other: please specify

Feel free to include any other feedback re: DDM usability and how we can make it work better for you.

Thanks!

1 C but would like to be at D2 A, C and E

A few comments

  1. my DDM is “jammed” by some messages, but I can not “disabled” them. I would like the option to filter out “this message” from this server triggered/generated by the user/prog/event/task.

  2. an option to clasify a message as “none important” and show them in a dif view. I would like to view them from time to time.

  3. would like to get a message in DDM when a stat reach a value/limit as: when replica.cluster.secondonqueues is more than 300 sec show this in DDM.

  4. I think I did an error when I setup DDM first time. I would like a technote that show how to “recreate” DDM on all servers without taking the servers down, if that is possibly.

thanks

1-aWhat is DDM?

*new 8.02 install, never saw domino before…

Subject: DDM and your network

  1. c and D depends on our clients2) A - How about SMS instead of pager please?

D - could benefit from knowing a larger history of who set up what, when and what changed.

F - Some autocorrect exits, but more is always helpful.

DDM, which is a combination of many things, from Stats/Events to logs to all types of possibilities, is just too cumbersome sometimes, especially for small organizations.

And can at times provide WAY too much data. Most people end up shutting all but the failure notices.

Biggest thing I want is the ability to control the ROUTING of the event notifications. It does not help me in the least bit if my mail server or SMTP server has failed for the DDM to send out messages about it does it? How will I know until the gateway gets restarted?

Alternative means of travel for emergency mail routing would be extremely helpful. Like if the server is internet aware, have it open up a telco provider the company uses and sms the admin. Not all admins create secondary SMTP routes or play with routing costs.

Subject: Survey

1 - A I’ve actually heard of it but never tried to get it going.

Monitoring could stand to be simplified and streamlined, especially for small installations with only a few servers.

Subject: Survey Response

  1. C & D

  2. A thru G

A - How about adding Sametime alerts also

G - It would be nice to allow monitoring across other Domino Domains easily

How about just combining DDM & DCT to be something like DTM (Domino Tuning & Monitoring)

More corrective actions out of the box

1D: it helps to see ehats going on in our domain2B: yes please… Would be nice if DCT (just heard about it, not yet tried) gets into this…

2C: I want certain logging events vanish (problems with compaction, if DB is in use), but not all. I’ve no idea how to configure this, the one time I tried I just got too annoyed after some trys.

G/F: add much more correctirve actions. If someon can figure out to report ist, someone should be able to tell what needs to be done with that. Automating it in some cases (should be something to config) would be a good thing!

Subject: Survey Response

1 - C2 - C,B,E

G - I echo the request to give us some additional rules or agents to do some filtering or auto closing.

Ex. the file in use errors during night time hrs when backups are running, or to auto close Security: Access alerts after xx days

) How would you characterize your use of DDM? B. I tried it but don’t really use it.

Reason: When I have enabled probes, they have taken down my servers, so I disable them. I am using the “old fashioned” Statistics & Events to do it instead.

  1. What improvements to DDM would provide the most value to you? Please pick your top 3:

B. Make probe configuration easier and more intuitive.

G. Other: You may already have documentation to alleviate my problem, but it would be good to have a good set of technotes.
