Domino Designer not loading

I just got 8.5 installed but I can’t get into the designer. I’ve seen various posts with the same problem but I haven’t been able to resolve it on my machine. I’ve got the Client and Designer on my Vista laptop. I get the infamous “Domino Designer client is not allowed to load while running Basic Notes client. Please load Standard Notes to run Domino Designer”.

Please help. Thanks.

Mike

Subject: Domino Designer on 8.5

While I am not running Vista, I have seen the problem when I’ve accidentally launched notes.exe (basic) instead nlnotes.exe or I had started my Admin client first. Are you able to start nlnotes (Standard Client) and then go into Designer? Just a thought to check out.

Subject: Domino Designer not loading…

Thanks Jim. I AM loading nlnotes.exe but cannot open the designer. I currently have the trial version but have over 70 days left. I can open the designer if my client is closed but not together. I’ve tried the basic version but it hands Notes. I’ve re-installed but to no avail. I have not had earlier versions of 8 on my machine, 8.5 was the first version 8. I do have 7 also though.

Subject: Jim has it backwards…

  • You must load notes.exe to get the “Standard” client. The “Basic” client is nlnotes.exe. I don’t know why Lotus did this, but I know I’m right, because nlnotes is how one runs multiple instances of the client in parallel, and R8.5 will not run in that manner and allow Designer to load. One must use notes.exe, which utterly and completely hoses any other instance of any other Notes client of any version that may be running. The “workaround” is to waste a hideous amount of system resources to instantiate a separate virtual machine for each instance of R8.5 one wishes to use simultaneously.

  • So run notes.exe and you should be golden, if you haven’t tried that already…

Subject: basic and standard clients

Inspite of opening notes.exe or nlnotes.exe, i was able to open basic client only. by changing usebasicnotes in notes.ini from 1 to 0 solved it
