Hi,
I’ve inherited a couple of servers running db clustering. They’re app. servers, NOT mail. Had a question regarding the set up of private ports. It seems the previous admin configured two interfaces (eth0 and eth0:1). No one here seems to know why and I’m seeing no traffic on the second (which isn’t surprising as it has never been set up as a domino port).
Before I remove the eth0:1 interface, has anyone any idea if it is needed?

Hi Rupey,Check the notes.ini of the server(s) and search for the items as outlined in the Administrator Help: “Setting up a private LAN for a cluster”.
Like: “Server_Cluster_Default_Port” setting.
On the console type: “show cluster” . In the results, look for the line “Server cluster default port: Cluster Port”.
You get the point.

Thanks Emilio,
I should have said that there’s no reference to the second IP or notes port in the notes.ini either…
So I guess I’ll get rid of it then…
Oh, another question: I read in another post that I should create named ports for all other TCP traffic (SMTP/POP3 etc) so it uses the “public” network port, not the default private cluster port. Makes sense as the private cluster port uses a cross-over link. Does this sound right?
Thx,

Hi Rupey,
That’s correct.
When using the private (cluster) port as default (notes.ini setting), all TCP traffic will use that default (notes) port. Except the ports named in the notes.ini to use port xyz. You would want that to seperate the clustering traffic with other TCP traffic on the available nic’s, like for the notes clients (1352). This is a setting made through the notes.ini. Anyway. To be safe, befor making any changes make a backup/copy of your server’s names.nsf and notes.ini.

Thanks again!
To clarify, do I need to bind each service (in my case it’ll be LDAP, SMTP & HTTP) to there own Notes port in the notes.ini and add these ports to the server (below the cluster port)? Do I then need to create server and port specific connection documents too?
Other than the Admin help info, is there any further documentation on clustering? I found an R5 guide, but not one for R6.

Hi,
I thought you only wanted to remove the interface
.
The Admin Help is sufficient for implementing a cluster with a private LAN. After following the procedure for creating the cluster with private LAN, the notes.ini will have entries like:
Ports= Cluster, TCPIP
Server_Cluster_Default_Port=CLUSTER
Next. For TCP traffic of specific protocols, like LDAP, SMTP & HTTP you need to create these lines in the notes.ini to make the protocols use the specific notes port:
SMTPNotesPort=TCPIP
LDAPNotesPort=TCPIP
HTTPNotesPort=TCPIP
This will force these protocols to use the TCPIP notes port.
These Help documents are all you need:
Setting up a cluster
Setting up a private LAN for a cluster
Reordering network ports on a server

E.

Thanks loads!
This is exactly what I was after (i.e. confirmation!).
