Sorry for asking what might be a dumb question. But we’ve just been asked by our sales team if notes client 6.5 will run ok with a Domino 8 server.

There are no dumb questions, but there could be a dumb answer ;).
Regarding 6.5 and Domino 8 → I am currently running this model Domino 8.0.1 and 6.5.3 clients and if we exclude just few things you should be aware about, we can say - there is no problem!!!
The first alert from my experience - if it is NOT necessary - do NOT migrate still to ODS 48 - I have some problems with the archiving e-mails if the archive is on ODS43 and out of your control to migrate to ODS48. The problem is that after archiving the emails are not moved to the archive, but they are visible in the mail file an when the user attempts ot use them the LN client is displaying "…document has been deleted " error. After convertion back to ODS43, compact + fixup + updall finally it works as it should.
Second possible problem I face is the with unexpected settings pushed down to the Notes clients → http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=899&uid=swg21299046
My recommendation → go directly to 8.0.2.
