Domino 8.5.1 server in a 7.0.2 environment

We are desperately trying to fend off a migration to Exchange. I have an opportunity to pilot Domino 8.5.1/iNotes. If successful, this would likely roll into a full scale deployment.I am looking to see if anyone has a best practice to standing up 8.5.1 in a mixed Domino environment. I understand that there are ways to do this without standing it up in the same Domain but in the interest of getting this in the door ASAP, I wanted to keep it in the same domain. I appreciate any thoughts.

Subject: mixed environment 6.5.6 and 8.0.2

I manage a mixed environment with Domino 6.5.6 and 8.0.2 servers. I only replicate names.nsf and admin4.nsf between servers with no problems. Maybe this helps you.

Subject: I’ve had 8.5.1 templates “escape” from the 8.5.1 server…still works fine

I have one 8.5.1 server and several 6.5.2 servers. I replicate the names and admin4 db, along with our custom applications. Through some erroneous replication scheduling, the templates replicated. The Directory was updated but all the servers still work fine. The only problem I’ve noticed is that the sever won’t create a log db if it’s missing. But if I put all the old templates back, it works fine.

Just disable replication of your templates, and in the design tab of the Directory set to “refresh design on admin server only.” And, of course, set a server as the admin server.
