Domino 6 Client on Domino 5 Server

As a company we are reluctant to use Domino 6 server for the moment. Would there be any advantages to using the Domino 6 client on our Domino 5 Server ?

We have a great deal of remote users ! Would any of the new features work while still using Domino 5 Server ?

The replication and Archiving features are of interest.

Many Thanks,

Ian.

No.

It would be a waste of time to do this. Users would get a new client with no usable new features and wonder why you bothered with updating them.

If you’re not going to update the server, don’t bother with the client.

Over all people will be disapointed but there are a couple of client side features to be gained.Detaching attachments from a document.

Edit attachment in Place.

The Reply without attachments option can easily be added to an R5 Mail template.

Improved bookmarks, replicator page, etc. We’re upgrading our international sales force to R6 clients. They’re not in town very often. We may not finish server updates for another month. I think it’s fine.

My experience is that the replication beween an R6 client and R5 is flawed. Starting with a replica on the laptop, I’ve gone online and done extensive folder reorganizations and memo removals, replicated and disconnected then found the folders and messages are still there. Soft deletes are turned off. Also, the ODS on the laptop is 43 not 41 as on the server. The replica of my mail file was created by File | Replication | New Replica with just the defaults chosen. Whether you’d get better mileage or not by starting with a replica made under R5 and transporting it to the client as a starting point remains to be seen.

When using the ND6 client on a R5 server you cannot take advantage of features that only ND6 can understand. For example, you cannot put an ND6 mail database on an R5 server and expect it to work properly.Upgrades should be done in this order:

  1. Server

2)Client

3)Mail database design.

Does anyone know if Mail Archiving will continue to work in this type of environment?
