I don’t think this is a dumb question because I’ve searched for other posts and the issue doesn’t seem to be clear…
Can a business (assume small for now) install a single Domino 6.5 server that will serve up Sametime as well? Is the need for separate servers now gone and it’s all a matter of performance as to whether the servers are split? It sounds to me like the Sametime server code is now part of the Domino install (might be wishful thinking on my part).
Thanks…Neil
P.S. If it’s true that we can have one server…Sametime use should climb quite a bit more than if it’s still two servers. Client integration is now a given…just asking about server integration.
Subject: Domino 6.5 and Sametime on the same server?
I don’t know about 6.5 but I installed Sametime 3.1 with Domino 6.0.2 on a Windows 2000 box and then migrated all my Domino mail and applications to it. It’s all running happily on one box.
Subject: RE: Domino 6.5 and Sametime on the same server?
Lotus plans to synchronize Sametime and QuickPlace on Domino server release 6.5.1, so you will not see a “Sametime Install” option when you install Domino 6.5 server, nor do I think you ever will.Sametime 3.1 runs on Domino 6.0.2 servers.
It’s CPU and memory intensive, and really deserves it’s own server.
A small company could certainly have everything on one Domino server: mail, apps, sametime. Today, however, that means they couldn’t upgrade that server to 6.5 until Sametime supports it – another reason to have Sametime on it’s own server.
Subject: Will IBM move Domino and Sametime concurrently from 6.5.1 onwards?
I guess the synching of Domino and Sametime might be happening around 6.5.1, but is this a one-time synch. or will they move lock-step forward from that point onwards or will we fall out of step once in a while?
However, on the positive side, the level of Sametime and Domino integration must be reaching a stage where new versions of sametime do not require new versions of Domino… That may relieve the burden of actually having to run a specific version of sametime against a specific version of domino…
Wishful thinking perhaps…
(Note to Lotus. Just verifying which version of sametime and which version of domino to run it on seems to be difficult. Whilst I’d like the best approach - that sametime v3.1 could run on anything above 6.0.2 - just improving the communication such that its easier to find out might help. This may also be true of the other tightly bound domino add-in’s such as Domino.Doc, etc…).
Another thing that might really help adoption of sametime is allowing sametime to run on a partitioned server. My recent experiences of trying to get that to work were less than successfull. Whilst a large user environment wouldnt use this functionality, it does increase adoption of this technology at the very low end of the market - that is - domino consultants such as us (influencers).
And of course, hosting companies that might want to consolidate lots of very small companies sametime servers on a single piece of (highly specced) tin. (I can just see Wes Morgan slapping his head at this suggestion and saying “Ay yi yi!”)
I think the other thing to note. When we say “small companies” in terms of Lotus domino - I think we’re really talking about folks like us - small domino consultancies - with test labs.
Given the costs of small servers - sub $1000 these days - and the costs of domino licenses, etc, I cant really see the addition of another machine being a huge problem with SME’s (say 50+ users) - especially when they see the meeting integration stuff. It is really compelling technology. So - can we get something to help out the 1-10, or 1-50 user companies please ?
For instance: why not build just the sametime messaging stuff into domino itself. Not the meeting rooms, not the video/audio. Just the chat. This would increase the adoption of this technologies by making it prevalent - and therefore increase the number of “sametime chat” licenses you could sell (perhaps at a lower cost than a full “sametime collaboration” license).
This might have the secondary benefit of completely screwing up M$'s marketing pitches with exchange 2003, for instance…
FWIW, I agree with you completely on the idea of building the base functionality of Sametime into Notes itself. I think that it’s really the next step for ND. IM seems to be the new web, and given all that the original incarnation of Domino has wrought, then the same tactic again has a good chance of being successful.
