Domino 6.5 and Sametime Integration

When you say Sametime is integrated with 6.5 just what does that mean? Does that mean a Domino maintenance agreement allows the upgrade to Domino 6.5 with Sametime at no additional cost? Or, does it mean that if you have a Sametime license the inegration features are pre-built? I have held on incorporating Sametime into my Domino environments strictly because of its hight cost. We have been using NetMeeting because it’s FREE. Isn’t Microsoft wonderful… Isn’t how I would like to do it, but cash is king.

Subject: <80% What’s Missing?

Conferencing, That’s my guess. If it has 80% of the features of adding a ‘REAL’ Sametime 3 server, maybe it’s easier to discribe what I wouldn’t get.

With Domino 6.5 I can…

Who is currently running the Sametime client.

Initialize an realtime chat.

I think that’s about it. Right?

I can not…

Initialize a conference.

Share a document.

Share an application. Right?

Subject: RE: <80% What’s Missing?

Sametime includes web conferencing (a.k.a screen and application sharing), plus instant messaging.

If you only want web conferencing, then netmeeting is good enough – although I don’t believe Microsoft updates it anymore. Sametime’s web conferencing is good for a small meeting, but for very large web presentations most people use something like WebEx. (Even IBM uses WebEx for presentations, not Sametime.)

I found Sametime incredibly simple to install. Zero admin costs from my perspective. I restart the server once a month for good measure.

I didn’t talk about the instant messaging benefits, but if you search this forum and the Sametime forum you’ll find the information you need.

Subject: However if you use conferencing/screensharing, you are actually in a Web Browser, not the Sametime Client.

Subject: Clarification

You still need a Sametime server in your environment. Notes 6.5 provides you integration of the Sametime servers presence and awareness capability. However, you still need to install Sametime.

Well you’re a little screwed now, as Microsoft net Meeting is no longer supported by Microsoft or distributed. So what is their solution? Upgrade to Office live server, which costs you 75 bucks a month per user for screenshares etc. plus license costs for server, and IM clients.

So if cash talks I guess you’ll be going to Microsoft as it is so much more expenive than the Lotus single user license fee.

The Notes 6.5 client has:

an embedded Instant Messaging client that gives you 80% of Sametime Connect Client functionality

the Notes 6.5 mail template has Sametime awareness built into the template.

Domino Designer 6.5 you can set a column propert to show online Sametime status

Just a few …
