Does Notes 7.0.3 work on Windows 8?

We run Notes 7.0.3 because we can’t afford to upgrade, but we are getting to the stage now when it is becoming impossible to buy new PCs with Windows 7 on them - everything is Windows 8 now.Does anyone know if Notes client r7.0.3 actually runs OK on this OS? - (Nothing on IBM support site goes anywhere beyond Windows 7 because 8 wasn’t invented with Notes r7 was around.)

Before we allow users to start buying Windows 8 laptops we need to know if Notes will still work.

Thanks

You are not on Passport Advantage? If so, you are eligible to update any time a new version comes out.

The easiest would probbaly be to get one test system with Windows 8 and install yoru version of Notes on it and see. I can’t believe any IT department would deploy new machines (new hardware and/or new operatings system) without doing a thorough test with all corporate software, etc. So I am sure you already have a test system.

IBM does not support Notes 7.0.3 on Win 8https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27010239

Does it work? Up to you to prove it.

How critical is the Notes environment to your business? If some function failed to work under Win 8, would it be a big deal or not? If the risk to your business is high, you’re better off moving to a version of Notes that IBM supports on Win 8.

I think you and I live in different worlds, but thank you for your input.

“Suck it and see” time!

If you move to a new platform without any due diligence testing, it may work fine or you may stop your company from working.

If Notes isn’t critical to day-to-day work, then a no test migration is low risk but likely to be noticed and no fun.

If Notes is critical, then I can’t believe you’d ever attempt to do a blind migration to a new platform without doing some kind of testing - there is too much career risk to do that. The question is then ‘how much is enough’ and only you can answer that.

Notes 7 is not supported by IBM on Win 8. If you take that on, it’s all on you. If you’re OK with that, then by all means go for it.

The risk/reward computation belongs to you so do what makes sense for you and your business.

What world do you live in?

If you are in a medium sized company (more than say 100 users), switching computers should include testing before they are purchased (to test all software, etc). We are about 85 users at my company, and we always order one or two laptops/desktops for test before we purchase a larger number of them, to install all our own applications, test them in our enviroment, etc.

If you are a small company, you can use the Collaboration Express license to pay only for the clients (I think around $140/user) and get any number of servers free. And IBM define “small” as less that 1000 users…

So it does not have to be expensive to upgrade to a version which is supported and not 9 years old (7.0.3 was released in October 2007, but 7.0 came in August 2005, and there is not much of a difference between those two versions).
