Does Inbox content load on Notes startup

Does anyone know if Notes automatically loads Inbox content when it launches? My company has been doing some testing with remote mailfiles and our local clients. If I set my location doc to point to a “remote” replica of my mailfile it takes quite a while for the Notes Client to load. However, once Notes is loaded, my Inbox content loads very quickly. Is this all cached/loaded on startup of the client?

I seem to recall that the Inbox does load by default (making Inbox Maintenance an important feature) but I’m not 100% on it.

Any ideas?

Yes, the last part of opening a mailfile is showing the Inbox-folder.

Thanks for the replies. The only reason I though it may be attempting to load something from the mailfile is that we have the mailfile (on the remote server) specified in the location document. If this also will not actually cause Inbox content to load/cache then I guess we have a different issue. Thanks again.

Are you confusing the client with the mail db?

The client (nlnotes.exe) typically loads local to the user and should be pretty fast. Opening the Notes client typically doesn’t load any dbs (although you can have it do some ‘unread checking’ if you like). If the client is loading slowly, then it may be the way you’re set up.

If you mean ‘mail db’, then yes, it may take a bit of time to load if your inbox is full and hasn’t been opened recently from the local side (view/folder indexes need to be updated).

There are a few databases accessed when the Notes client starts:

names.nsf

pubnames.nsf

pubdircat5.nsf

bookmark.nsf

so when they cannot be accessed fast (being on a remote disc) starting the client couild take some time.
