Does archive database size decrease when individual mail is deleted?

hi guys…i’ve got a rather simple question. in an archived mail database, does the .nsf file decrease in size whenever a mail is deleted from the archived database?

e.g does a.nsf decrease in size when a 6mb mail in the database is deleted?

the reason i ask this is because, i’ve tried deleting alot of huge mails from my archived database but it doesnt seem to be decreasing in size according to windows explorer.

am i missing a step?

No. The file remains the same size until the database is compacted – whitespace is preserved to make writing to the database file more efficient and avoid file fragmentation. To recover disk space, you need to compact (on local, open the database properties, go to the “i” tab, and click the “Compact” button).
