Do not automatically add: Any Names to Recent Contacts (not working)

Recent Contacts causing a mess for me since it was added to Lotus Notes! Still havn’t got any good reply why Recent cotnacts is a primary source when addressing e-mails? Why can’t the default priority be:NAB

Personal

Recent

If there are any intelligent way that the Notes client figures out what addess to display in the type ahead, it’s not working. - Can someone explain who Notes thinks?

Now to todays issue with recent contacs:

I’m trying to help users who is complaning about e-mails being sent to totally strangers by misstake. To disable Recent Contacts on their Lotus Notes 8.5.2 Standard clients: by having them go to:

Preferences → Contacts → Do not automatically add: Any Names to Recent Contacts.

That part works fine… BUT: It makes no diffrence what so ever, the recent contacts is still added to the recent contacts list just as before. Why?

All help is much appreciated.

Kindest regards

Rasmus

Subject: I am also having this problem.

I have the full Admin/Dev/Client install and I am having this problem as well. In fact, I’m getting addresses show up in the Recent Contact list for users who have been gone from the company for years, so I don’t even know where they are coming from.

Subject: Since you want to get rid of all the Recent Contacts just delete them from the Recent Contacts view and than shut down notes and delete the com.ibm.notes.dip folder.

Subject: That would have been a good solution if…

…it was for one user and not 1 500 with the same problem. Hope the developement gets back regarding this soon.

Best regards

Rasmus

Subject: This has been fixed in Notes 8.5.3 beyond CD1

Subject: Is this fixed in 8.5.2 FP1?

Is this fixed in 8.5.2 FP1? I don’t see it listed on the fix list?

Subject: Until the fix is available in a 852 fixpack, the following is the workaround

Shutdown the client.

The user can go to C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data\workspace.metadata.plugins\com.ibm.notes.dip directory and delete all the files under that directory.

Restart the client, this should clear the recent contacts and hence the bad addresses.

The fix is being aggressively backported to 852 and 802 fix packs.

Subject: What about OS X? Any solution for that?

Hi,

This workaround is for Windows only, but the problem is cross platform, affecting Lotus Notes 8.5.2 on OS X 10.6 as well.

Any solutions for this?

Really, really annoying stuff… And an amazingly bad advertising for Lotus Notes towards the users.

Thanks.

Subject: response

/Users//Library/Application Support/Lotus Notes Data/Expeditor/Applications/.metadata/.plugins/com.ibm.notes.dip

This is fixed in 853CD2.

Subject: Notes Routing

Any chance you could answer why Notes routing order is not in the below order? Problem is some folks like the recent contacts feature and don’t want it disabled. In our case, we wouldn’t be experiencing issues if routing was based per below.

  1. NAB

  2. Personal Contacts

  3. Recent Contacts

Subject: Excatly!

Havn’t seen any answers to why this is not the case, if it would route: NAB, PAB and then Recent Contacts. Then it wouldn’t even be a big problem with the bugs in Recent Contacts as it is today.

Why?..

Subject: Solved: downgraded all to 8.5.2 basic

Hi,

The new feature to deal with Recent Contacts in 8.5.2 does not seem to work as expected:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21455498

We decided here to wait for a stable version of this feature and got ‘back’ to the old school R7 Type Ahead feature in 8.5.2 basic (notes.ini trick).

Subject: notes.ini setting

I’m not sure if it will help, but did you try the notes.ini setting to turn off recent contact adding? It is DisableDPABProcessing=1.

Subject: I did delete all recent contacts prior turning off recent contacts.

I did delete all recent contacts prior turning off recent contacts. Tried it twice the last month on my LN, and also on two users with the same result.

Thanks; I’m aware of the notes.ini setting. But i don’t want to disable it for all users (via policys) and i don’t want to add it manually on each PC’s ini file. (I just want the client to work

Thank you for forwarding this to developement. And please also let me know how to make sure the type ahead goes to the most reliable source first “NAB”, then the one i control myself “Personal” and last (if enabled) the recent contacts list that is very unreliable as a source.

That would make me a very happy admin

Thank you!

Subject: because…

u pretty sure didnt delete the recent contact- list that already exists. Since the option said do not add new, what doesn’t mean to not use the already ones in the list

more interessting in your issue would be to set Do not add Names from Mails i receive, only from mails i sent.

Subject: forwarded to development

Subject: workaround…

for now as a workaround u could create a dynamic policy and put the users or a group with users in there where it should be disabled.

Subject: Any update on when a solution will be available

Any date for 8.5.2 FP2? or an interim / hot fix?

This is killing us. Phantom email addresses keep appearing in user’s recent contacts, even though there is no record of these names when your search the mail file.

I’ve tried the recommended solution of deleting the files within the workspace folder (com.ibm.notes.dip) but they keep coming back.

Subject: Do not automatically add recent contacts does not work

Add me to the list of people frustrated that the do not automatically add recent contacts option does not work. I have mine set to only add recent contacts from emails I send. I completely flushed my recent contacts, closed Notes, deleted the contents of the com.ibm.notes.dip folder, and then restarted Notes. Within 15 minutes before I had sent a single email, I had 18 recent contacts, only a handful of which I have ever sent an email.

To add further to the frustration, shortly after upgrading the IT department to 8.5.2, someone inadvertently appended a dot to the Domino domain of a Notes user’s address. Within no time, almost everyone in our department had that address in their recent contacts. Of course, that address took precedence over the real address, and everyone was complaining to me about undeliverable notifications. I instructed everyone to delete the contact and update their settings to only add contacts that they send to, but it doesn’t work. I’ve seen that contact show up in my recent contacts numerous times despite deleting it repeatedly and despite the fact I’ve never sent to it. It even appears multiple times in recent contacts. I eventually had to add an address rewrite rule to our Linux Internet mail relays (where the emails were being routed to) just get the problem to go away.

How does such a basic and important feature get so thoroughly messed up?

Subject: Hear!

I’m VERY happy to hear that i’m not the only one with these questions. I don’t understand why this major bug wasn’t fixed the day after it’s first release??

I’m in the excact same possition, having to explain to various in top management that you simply can’t trust that e-mails is delivered to the intended recipient(s). Very hard task.

I finally started to respond all questions with. - You can turn it off. Boy did i look silly when they came back to me and told me that the turn off setting didn’t work.

The situation is extreemly dangerous for all our users, and totally unacceptable for people handling critical company information. It could very well turn into disaster for the whole company.

I have been very critical to Recent contacts for years now and still i havn’t got any answers how you can implement a function that in seconds can totally mess up all mail routing?

Secondly please let me know WHY is Recent contacts the default and Primary source for message routing??? Recent contacts in the very best of systems will still naturally contain incorrect information, typos, dead addresses and so on and should always be last source to look for address info.

Get me right, i’m fighting every day for our company to keep using Notes so me complaining here is for the best of reasons.

I need answers. Very happy today for you telling me that that a fixpack is on it’s way. But why have we got this problem? in my world non of this would have happened if the routing was based on:

  1. NAB

  2. Personal Contacts

LAST. Recent Contacts

Thank you!
