Hello,
I am currently setting up a new Domino server, the aim is to migrate from Exchange to
Domino (450 mailboxes).
We already had a Domino server, used with Workflow (30 people registered on it).
I have installed the server, configured a couple of things, if I send a message to a
Lotus user he gets it right, now I want to send external e-mails, I have a problem with
that.
When I start the server, I quickly get an error message :
Failed to connect to SMTP host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx because remote system no longer responding
I also get :
DNS: Non-existent domain
I read most of he answers given about this problem, which appears to be a DNS problem.
The Domino server is not directly connected in the DMZ, and we used our ISP’s mailgate
for the external emails.
Here is what I did, so far :
-
telnet the mailgate from Domino, no problem I can access it on port 25
-
checked our DNs information in Windows 2003, all ok I can ping www.yahoo.com and get an
answer)
- added this line in the registry :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\ key :
NameServer=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in which I put the provider’s DNS IP
- modified the port time out in the configuration document, set it to 60s (instead of 5)
I still have the messages, and can’t send external e-mails…
Would you have a suggestion to help me work things out?
Thanks!!
Mac
Subject: DNS: Non-existent domain
tell domino which dns server to use as well
set con DNSServer=x.x.x.x
see if that helps

Hi,
thansk for your answer, I had tried this already (directly set in the notes.ini).
What I did since yesterday is :
I deleted the SMTP relay at my ISP in the Mail configuration document, meaning I only work now with the Foreign SMTP Domain+SMTP Connection document, properly filled, which means that my ISP’s SMTP IP address doesn’t appear anywhere right, so Domino isn’t aware that it has to send through this relay.
Now the error message goes like :
Router: Failed to connect to SMTP host LAPOSTE.NET because Remote system no longer responding(xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx being the ISP’s SMTP host)
In this case, and from my understanding, my Domino beeing on the LAN (rather than DMZ), LAPOSTE.NET prevents any mail being sent through him (as the PTR isn’t correct), that’s why I get the message above (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong).
There is still a DNS problem in the loop, but where???

Hi,
Let me understand. You want to send all the external mail through your ISP, right?
So you don’t need DNS. Just configure your server configuration to forward all messages to a smart host.

Daniel

Hi,
actually yes I want to send all the emails through our ISP’s gateway. I succeded now (there was a lock on the firewall, an old rule).
So I can now send e-mail away, but I still get the error DNS: Non-existent domain, and I really wonder where it comes from…
