Distribution Lists Size Limits

Is there a default size limit for end user distribution lists? If so what is the size and how would that limit be increased?

Thanks,

Rich

Richard,

The limits are simply the SUMMARY data limits in your memo. Those are hardcoded into the product, so you won’t change those. You can search the forum for estimates on how many names you might squeeze into that limit.

The workaround I’ve been most satisfied with is to make an application which sends big mail out one memo at a time. Although theoretically wasteful in terms of performance, the advantages are plentiful (personalized greetings, no cap on number of recipients, people only see their own name, etc.)

good luck,

raphael

Yes. From the help file:

Text field size

32KB (storage); 32KB displayed in a view’s column

The number of names will depend upon their size. (CN=Stephen M Christian/OU=OUNIT/O=ORG is 37 characters so using the magic number of 50 to be safe…) That’s about 650 names.

To get around this create a group of sub-groups. The subgroups have the names and the group has the subgroup names:

MainGroup has SubGroup1, SubGroup2, SubGroupN

SubGroup1 has Person1, Person2, … PersonA

SubGroup2 has PersonA+1, PersonA+2, … PersonA+B

etc.

Of course if you have more than 650 subgroups then you run into the program again and you need to create a higher level grouping.

Not sure how things are handled internally when it expands the groups and subgroups.

I have a e-mail distribution tool I wrote and I just BCC the subgroups one at a time.

I’m sure others can supply more details.

Stephen.
