Disallow COPYING field but ALLOW printing

Is there a way to diallow a Reader from copying the contents of a field (either at the field, form or database level) but still allow them to PRINT the document?

We wouldn’t mind if they’d have a hardcopy, but we don’t want them copying the contents of a field, pasting it somewhere and modifying it.

The ACL ‘Replicate or Copy documents’ option restricts printing as does the form option of ‘Disable printing/forwarding/copying to clipboard’.

This might work . . .

The form with which documents are created should not allow printing so you create a second form that does. The printable form should have creation access restricted (it shouldn’t appear in the create menu, etc). The only way you want it to be used is for printing. Give it a $SaveOptions field value of “0” so that documents are never saved with it. Enable the “Formulas inherit values from selected document” property (below).

You’d need to provide a print button/action in which you simply compose a new “print” document, print it, and close it. So your code might look something like:

Const PRINT_ONLY_FORM = “print form name”

Dim wrkspc As NotesUIWorkspace

Dim ndbSrc As NotesDatabase

Dim uiDoc As NotesUIDocument

Set wrkspc = New NotesUIWorkspace()

Set ndbSrc = wrkspc.CurrentDatabase.Database

Set uiDoc = wrkspc.ComposeDocument(ndbSrc.Server, ndbSrc.FilePath, PRINT_ONLY_FORM)

Call uiDoc.Print(1)

Call uiDoc.Close(True)

Formula should work for the button too . . . come to think of it, it might even be better.

I haven’t tried this of course . . . just theory. There may be holes in it too . . . one that comes to mind is a form formula in a private view that uses the printable form to load documents. That may be one of many. Might be worth a try though.
