Disable return receipt for incoming internet mails

Hi admins,

I just realized that we are sending return receipts when opening/reading internet mails.

As far as I understand the admin help, I can disable this feature in the config document, MIME tab, Conversion Options tab. But this field is already disabled!

Do I have to do sth else? And, when/ on which mails does the setting in the config document work?

Thanks for any help in advance

Uwe

you don’t have to do anything else – the config setting you mentioned is the correct one. the setting is applied on the domino server which first receives the internet format message over an smtp connection.

if the setting is ‘enabled’ and the message contains a ‘Return-Receipt-To:’ or a ‘Disposition-Notification-To:’ header and the address specified in the header matches the sender’s address, then the smtp server creates a ‘ReturnReceipt’ document item with a value of “1”. (notes does not send return receipts to addresses other than the sender’s.)

if the setting is ‘disabled’, then the smtp server does not create a ‘ReturnReceipt’ item.

if the notes editor opens a document that has a ‘ReturnReceipt’ item with a value of “1”, it sends a return receipt to the sender.

do you have the setting on the correct server? is the ‘International MIME Settings’ on the configuration’s Basic page enabled or disabled?

Thanks for your quick answer, Paul.

My settings are:

  • Basic | International MIME Settings: disabled (not checked)

  • Mime | Conversion Options: disabled

Did I understand you right: the smtp server deletes (does not create) the ‘ReturnReceipt’ item when receiving the mail?

Maybe that is the reason that the “disabling” does not work: we get internet mail from a ISP via a pop account (directly to the mail files on the domino server)?

gAck. sorry – i assumed ‘smtp’ when you said ‘incoming internet mails’. you’re using the notes client to fetch your mail over pop3, correct? neither the pop3 nor imap ‘clients’ can read the server config, so they use “internal” defaults for the various settings and return receipts are enabled by default.

so - there isn’t even a chance for an agent, if I get your point correctly? (because the before new mail arrives agent do not work on incoming pop mails either, didn’t it?)

correct. as suggested here ---- you can modify the mail template to give some indication of a return receipt.

There’s a couple of ways to modify the default mailtemplate, so that it will show return receipts and give you some more control over it. The easiest way perhaps is to use www.openntf.org mailtemplate, wich shows if a return receipt is attachted, and prompts you if you want to allow to send it or not (configurable, btw…)

I’ve said it before - I’d install a Domino mailserver if I were you…

Subject: 2nd mail server

you are probably right -

just coming back from the CeBIT*, I learned a few things about AV & Antispam (e.g. Trend micro), looks fine… so I will do my very best to convince my bosses to install a 2nd mail server in the DMZ.
