Directory design update with an R5 server in the domain

I wish to upgrade our Clustered mail servers from 7.0.2 to 8.5 for the Ultralite / iPhone support. We also have a Blackberry server at 7.0.2 that will be that way for a while. But I have an old Utility server the mail passes through and has a legacy scanning utility running R5 (I know, I’m sorry).

Of course it is so old the documentation says “Sorry, End Of Life”. But will there be a problem if the Domino Directory gets upgraded? I can see this server remaining “as is” for at least 6 months and do not want to hold off the upgrade. Should I just shut-down design replication and let the documents continue?

This scares me since I have had strange replication problems in the past.

Thanks - Dave

Subject: My suggestion

Bring down the R5 Server and make a backup of the names.nsf, let the 8.5 directory flow freely into the R5 domino server… We haven’t tested this that much but there is nothing that I’m aware of that will prevent it from working just fine.

If you do run into problems, take a os level copy of the backup of your directory to a Notes Client and uncheck receiving Design Elements and then put this back in place on your R5 Server if you have to…
