Different 8.5 client install failure

Having some strangeness installing the 8.5 gold client. I cleaned the machine off completely before starting, removing all traces of the 8.02 client as well as the earlier 8.5b2 client, both of which ran well. I mean, literally, all traces. Temp files, directories, registry entries, stuff buried in the user profile directories, anything that had “Lotus” or “IBM” on it got destroyed and the trash thrown out. There’s nothing left.

Logged in as the local machine administrator and started the AllClients install. First, it didn’t default to installing the Designer and Admin, but they were available as options. Went ahead and did just the client anyway, and the install completed without incident. At startup, the client asked for the ID file, Domino server info, all that stuff. The configuration completed, and the last display near the thermometer at the top of the splash screen was “checking for new mail.” Then notes.exe exited, taking with it the splash screen, and leaving nlnotes.exe and ntaskldr.exe running. They’re STILL running, in fact, but doing nothing, half an hour later at 0% CPU. They’re orphans.

I went back, did a complete uninstall and purged all trace of the first install. Installed again, this time selecting every option on the board: Designer, Admin, Sametime, everything. The install completed, but reported a problem on apparently three .features in the Eclipse install. Starting any of the clients after that resulted in an immediate crash and an NSD.

Just for s&g’s, I went back and removed the gold code and reinstalled 8.5b2. It installs and runs perfectly on the same workstation, under the same login, nothing else changed. I even re-downloaded the gold code from Passport Advantage and did it all again. Nope. Persistent crash, no clients.

I’ve already put a PMR in on this one, because if the effin’ beta code works fine, the gold code should work even better. Just wondered if anyone else had encountered severe problems installing the gold and if so, what you did to get past it.

Subject: Installs

Hey Turtle,

I was wondering have you tried installing Notes in a different directory say Test. Then uninstall the client and then install in the default folder or your folder of choice?

I had a weird issue when I installed a beta version of the server and the install would not complete until I completed the above.
