Difference between database and a template

Difference between database(.nsf) and a template(.ntf)

Subject: Difference between database and a template

AFAIK there is no difference between the content of a database and a template, except the following:

database:

template:

file name extension:

.NSF

.NTF

Database properties > Design tab > Database file is a master template

no

yes

From the following statements (if true  comes that :

you can change between database and template if you change the file name extension and the “Database file is a master template” checkbox state.

P.S.

Of course take care of the “Inherit design from master template” > “Template name” nad

“Database file is a master template” > “Template name” fields.

I suppose that you understand them. If not, I help with pleasure.

Hi

Although you’re absolutely right, I think that you omitted a few things.

A template is a kinda parent Class (in OO speaking)

A DB is a FINAL class (idem).

A template cannot be accessed by web (AFAIK), and I do not believe that a server will authorize agents.

On a server, every class inheriting from (a) master template(s) - yes they may be several -

will be updated by a task named updall (as far as I remember) according to its schedule (most of the times,

by night).

Please note that a db can inherit from its template’s profile documents.

Finally, we should admit that a template is what its name means, and that its aim is to make deployments easier.

But it is not its purpose to be used like a normal DB (web or server access).

Although you can get away with using an NSF in place of an NTF (and vice versa), I would never recommend it. There are a few contexts where it does make a difference. One of the more obvious ones is that you do not see NTFs in the list of databases on a server when you use . Stick with NTF only as a template holding the design of a database (and possibly a few initial documents).

Hi Preeti,

If u r just looking for baseline answer for this… i would only say that ntf. is design of database which will not have document in it…its also called database stub.

nsf. file the database file which will have documents in it…

do let m know incase u need further clarification.

Subject: Replica stub?

I’m not sure I have heard the term “database stub”. Are you confusing it with “replica stub”?
