There is no rhyme or reason to this problem… works fine at another account. We create an organization policy named */test where test is the organization. In the organizational policy, we select the V7 desktop setting then save. This (org. policy) is supposed to be applicable to all users with */test. I understand that the mail template upgrade only works once… when a client is upgraded and authenticates with server for 1st time. I’m used to seeing “mail template upgrade submitted” or something similar on the client status bar. It is not there. It is causing us to convert templates the good old fashioned way. This becomes cumbersom with all the migration groups… esp. since you cannot shift-click and select FILE > Database > Remplace Design. Why Oh Why can you not do this? PLEASE put this in the next Admin client… in migration cases (where template upgrade does not work), you might have a group of 50 users that require manual design replace/convert since the entire mail directory cannot be converted. I know you can do text files… just cumbersome. The process of setting up the organizational policy + desktop setting is simple… is there any notes.ini setting on the server or any other setting that could be causing this issue? Does it require a server restart? We even tried removing the organizational policy then creating an explicit policy -w- same desktop setting. It populates the policy field in each person document but no actions occur. Please help…
Subject: Desktop Policy Setting & Mail Template Upgrade
Hi Michael:
Did you check the following:
-
local names.nsf (aka personal address book) → hidden view ($Policies): Do you see the policies?
-
Is the Dynamic Update enabled on the location documents : open and edit the current location and go to Action/Advanced/Set Update Flag. You must be in edit mode to access this feature.
This is my 2 cents!
Happy New Year!

Thanks… great suggestions and Happy New Year to you! I checked the $Policies view and saw the settings. I was not aware that a manual “Set Update Flag” was required. I thought by default V7 clients would accept new policies. Let me test… how would this affect a migration? Any way to force this setting using script, etc…?

If you are OK and your company allows mail template modifications, you can add the code snippet below into the Database Resources → Database Script → Post Open event:
On Error Goto ErrRtn
Dim db As NotesDatabase
Dim view As NotesView
Dim doc As NotesDocument
Set db = New NotesDatabase( "", "names.nsf" )
Set view = db.GetView( "($Locations)" )
Set doc = view.GetFirstDocument
While Not ( doc Is Nothing )
doc.AcceptUpdates = "1"
Call doc.Save( True, False )
Set doc = view.GetNextDocument( doc )
Wend
Exit Sub
ErrRtn:
Print "Error " + Str(Err) + " - " + Error$ + " at " + Str(Erl)
Exit Sub
I copied-and-pasted the above code and I hope it appears legible for you (it should look OK after you cop-and-paste).
I am pulling out my hair trying to get an explicit policy to work in my environment. I cannot get anything to appear in my ($Policies) view of the personal addressbook. I only have one desktop setting in the Domino directory, so inheritance and enforcement on other levels do not apply. I hope my code helps and let me know if you get an answer on getting the policies working.
