I just installed R8 client on a system that already has R8 server. The client part works fine as frog hair, but when I try to load Designer, either by right-click on a workspace icon or using its icon, the drive “scratches” for a bit and then it’s quiet. No Designer. No processes that appear to be Designer or related to Designer.- I do get a dialog from Zonealarm saying “checkpid.exe” is attempting to access the framework or some such, which I allow.
-
If I do this dog and pony show while a bona-fide process tool is open (not task manager), I sometimes VERY briefly see something pop in, then right back out. It’s so short I only see the fact it was there, not what it was, and it’s not consistent about appearing at all. I suspect it’s loading and unloading this process every time, but it’s such a tiny fraction of a second that the tool generally doesn’t show it.
-
I’ve run a dozen forum searches relating to Designer not launching, and an R8 Client & Server on the same box, to no avail.
-
I’m assuming this is “an unsupported configuration”, but I’d like to hear it’s resolvable.
-
Thanks for your time…
Subject: yes, this is unsupported, but…
-
when you say R8, do you mean 8 or 8.5?- did you install into the same or different data directories?
-
when you launch designer, is the regular or admin client already up? Are you running (it/them) in basic or standard mode?
This should help narrow things a bit to figure it out!
thanks!
Subject: STILL BROKEN: By random action rather than specific intent…
- Summary in the subject line, but the client’s About screen reports:
Release 8.5
Revision 20081211.1925 (Release 8.5)
Standard Configuration
-
The Server is R8.5 as well, but I’m not sure of build version. Console says “Dec 5 '08” at the top.
-
Server is on the D: drive and Client is on the C: drive.
-
The regular client is up in standard (framework?) mode. If it’s not I get a dialog that says Designer won’t run from Basic mode, but I don’t see that dialog. I run the client using “notes.exe”, not “nlnotes.exe”, because the latter appears to be that very same Basic mode that prevents Designer from working.
-
I attempt to load Designer the way I have for over a decade … I right-click an icon on the workspace and select “Open in Designer”. I don’t even know how to run Designer by itself, though if I looked through the client directory I’m sure I could find it. (grin)
-
Found it. Today, at least, it loads “designer.exe” fine as frog hair. It will NOT launch Designer from the client. Zonealarm pops the same dailog about checkPID.exe, then nothing happens. It’s like this binary is aborting the load of Designer.
-
If I launch Designer by itself, then tell it to open the client it does just that, which is more than passing strange. My Home page assignment got lost, but otherwise it appears to be correct.
-
If I then right-click → Open in Designer from the client it works, because Designer is already open from trying it above. If I close Designer and open from the icon it works again. If I close Designer and Client, open the client, and open from the icon, it works again.
-
Apparently once BOTH client and designer were opened at once it automagically updated soemthing somewhere, and now it seems to always opens both as expected.
-
We’ll see what happens tomorrow.
-
Thanks for your time, Maureen!..
Subject: It’s three days later and still working…
-
So if you want to run a R8.5 server, client, and designer on one box, and designer won’t launch from the client, close the client and run designer.exe, then use that to launch the client.- Once that’s done designer appears to then launch from the client, ever more.
-
Hope this helps someone later…
Subject: Eleven days later it’s broken again…
-
I’m right back where I was … when I try to launch Designer from the client, I checkPID pops a dialog from ZA, and when I tell it “ok”, it appears to be explicitly killing Designer. If I click the Designer icon over and over and over I can sometimes see “designer.exe” appear as a child process under “notes2.exe”, then it instantly disappears.- The infuriating thing is it WORKED. There can be NO technical reason for this to be happening, like some incompatibility. The system is simply and arbitrarily killing designer for no apparent reason.
-
The more I use R8, the less of an advancement it seems to be, in terms of USABILITY. It can have all the uber-spiff features on the planet, but if the interface is flakey and randomly restrictive then it’s LESS usable.
Subject: Incidently…
If you need support to look at this can you log a PMR. Thanks.
Subject: Actually I can’t open a trouble ticket
- In her original response to my post, Maureen says I’m using an “unsupported configuration”. It seems I’ve been using five different versions of Notes/Domino in various “unsupported configurations” for twelve years now. How do people use this system in a “supported configuration”?
Subject: Unsupported configurations
Unsupported configurations does not mean your issue is automatically unsupported.
If you can reproduce the issue on a supported configuration then support can help to progress investigation. Hope that helps as well. Thanks.
Subject: Disable Zonealarm?
Have you tried disabling zone alarm to see if it still happens?
DIsable as in switch off. It has been a while since I last used ZA but I recall in some instances where you disabled it, it would go into a lockdown mode.
Subject: I have to admit I hadn’t thought of disabling ZA…
-
So far it’s been working, so I haven’t had to do the Designer first dog and pony show. If it happens again I’ll try to remember this to see what it does.- Another thing I want to try is click “Deny” when checkPID pops its dialog and see what happens.
-
Hopefully I won’t have to remember … the automagic will simply work now. Time will tell, or it won’t.

Thanks!
