Designer Client

I just love how it takes forever to do just about anything in the designer. For instance, it just took me 3 minutes to close it…this screen popped up:

Nice…now I remember why I avoid designer like the plague.

Subject: hmmm

I don’t really see that as much any more… On rare occasion since 8.5.1.

I don’t do this… but I think it’s best to develop locally as much as possible…

Subject: I always develop locally…

  • But that’s not because of R8.5.x. It’s because I have full and complete control over my local development server, so if it crashes, I need special settings, I have to kill its process, whatever, it’s trivially simple to do so, and it affects no one but me.

  • The icing on the cake is now that I am using R8.5.1 it’s significantly faster to do anything and everything hitting a server on the LAN than hitting a server literally anywhere else. When I have to update a remote server, for instance, I can tell it’s an order of magnitude slower across the board. That could be because my 'net link is an order of magnitude slower than my LAN, but I’ve been using this link for years and never noticed it this dramatically before DDE. I surmise DDE is doing a lot more interaction with the server than Designer used to, essentially magnifying the speed difference between LAN and WAN.

  • With templates it’s child’s play to put code on the remote server. So why not develop locally?

  • Or did you mean using the local client? I’ve had issues with that and avoid it like anthrax, particularly with web development. “Preview” is good, but it’s simply not the same as actually hitting a real server.

  • I do very often see a similar dialog when closing DDE. It says it’s waiting for “No pending operation” to complete. It typically takes about seven seconds for nothing to get done, then it’s all good. If that were the worst thing I saw wrong with DDE I sing its praises 'til the cows came home.

Hope this helps…
