We’ve got a mixed environment on our main project: majority PCs, almost a third Suns, a few sprinkles of Linux, and about 1% Mac.
We’ve been putting a lot of effort into getting folks excited about ND6, and having exceptional success. However, one of our key Notes power users is on the Mac. The user has the latest R5 incarnation of Designer, but since I can’t seem to find a Designer 6 to download… WE CAN’T UPGRADE HIM!!! Ugh!
Can someone please tell me what the hold up is in making the Designer 6 available? Maybe an ETA, so we can at lest plan how long our pain will last… or better still, if it happens to be available somewhere (and isn’t otherwise obvious at this point)… and send us a link to it?
And, NO! Putting a PC on his desk is NOT an option!

If you can spare a PC desktop running XP, I would suggest setting this up on the network (doesn’t need to be on his desk) and using the OS X version of MS Remote Desktop Connection to give him access to designer on the PC via Virtual Desktop.
I use this via VPN from my Mac at home back to my office PC and it works great. I’ve always found Virtual PC and other emulators to be too slow for real work. Maybe things have changed though.
As to ‘power user’ with Designer… this is a power user that we put to work, but in an official sense, we don’t class him as one of our developers. we’ve got some specialized apps that tend to need some very specific tweaking on a regular basis, and since he’s willing to tackle it…we go for it! Believe me, he knows what NOT to touch.
Now, with all that aside… I have another question…
I’m assuming that the R5 Designer will work with a Notes 6 client installed. Since they’re separate programs, I’m thinking that R5 Designer with a Notes 6 client might just work… and no need for an emulator. Can anyone verify that this will work, or even sight any problems encountered?
If this works… it could be the best of both worlds.
I just installed a set-up with Notes 6 client and Designer 5 on the same computer running OS 10.2.x. My extended thinking was that since Designer 5 would run in Classic and Notes 6 in the 10 system the two apps would run virtually exclusive of each other. It’s been a week and the user has been working heavily in Designer as well as having Notes running with no complaints or noted problems.
So if no PC on his desk, why not put an emulator on the Mac?
I cannot imagine IBM porting Designer 6 to the Mac because there probably not enough developers using Mac in the real world to support the cost, especially if you have 2 code to 2 or more Mac Operating systems.
