Deleteing cache.dsk before upgrading

Hello,

Are there any pros and cons of deleting cache.dsk file before upgrading to the R6.5.1 from R5? Will it be OK if I delete the cache.dsk file on all machine before upgrading to the R6.5.1?

Thanks.

No, you can delete the cache at any time. The only “drawback” is that it will take a little longer to open (and re-cache) elements.

For me as well a good question… i am standing in front of uprgrading 400 R5 clients to 6.5.1…is the deletion of cache.dsk recommended before upgrading clients?

If it were recommended, the installer or setup code would have probably done it.

We just upgraded 1800 clients from 5.0.10 to 6.5.1. Our upgrade scenario may be different than everyone elses - we upgraded our backend (servers) first to 6.5.1, then pilot tested 120 users to 6.5.1 client. We left the remaining 1680 users on 5.0.10 during the 2 week pilot test. What we discovered is that we needed to delete the cache.dsk file on those 5.0.10 clients who were accessing the 6.5.1 backend. If this wasn’t done, the users experienced extreme, extreme performance issues. We actually wrote a script to delete that file and add the InitialCacheQuota=30720 in the notes.ini file so their cache would be increased from 5MB to 30MB. This improved their performance tremendously.

Malene , would you be willing to share your script for deleting the cache and editing the Notes.ini?

You are joking, right?

It is my job to pick apart installers and setup routines. I have seem some wierd stuff from all major vendors. everyone makes mistakes.

For e.g. when Minitab released version 14, they didn’t package the application correctly. They charge extra $$$ for Six Sigma module, but due to a mistake they made while packaging, you can install the six sigma module without paying extra or getting the product key. You just need to know how MSI works.

I can give other examples form other vendors as well. But my point is that everyone makes mistakes.

While I don’t know for sure, remember that the cache holds items from databases that you open (like forms) so that they don’t have to be “read” each time they are used.

Updating the client’s version will NOT change the database items that are cached, so I would guess that it makes no difference what-so-ever.
