I’m adapting a database to a new purpose and stipping some fields from forms. In Designer, however, it seems that once I create a field it persists forever.
Is there a way to get rid of the clutter. I’m not a very fastidious person, but there are limits.

Yea, you can write an agent with the following code:

When you remove a field from a form, don’t select the field as you would text but just click on it. Then press Delete; this will remove it from the field list. That’s how it worked in R4 anyway which was when I last looked at this issue. If you select the field and delete, as you would to remove some text from the form, it will not be removed from the field list.
You could try putting a field of the same name back on the form and then removing it in the manner I describe above.
