DDE makes snails look like Ferraris

  • It just took over a minute to paste 8 lines of source from on custom control to another. During this time DDE was utterly and completely unresponsive. If I hadn’t started this posting, I would have killed DDE’s process, it was so dead.- This is intolerable. It makes me want to use anything, even visual studio, as long as I DON’T have to use DDE.

  • I love Domino, as an application server. It’s so incredibly flexible, and trivial to maintain. Domino is a true work of art that shows what Lotus can do.

  • So why is DDE so utterly messed up??

Subject: Agree…

I would downgrade to 8.0.2 if I was a Domino Designer. The 8.5.0 Eclipse Designer is a pain in the …

I hear rumors that Designer in 8.5.1 will be much faster (up to 80% faster) - hope it’s true.

I often wonder if Eclipse was the right choise alltogether for Notes clients…sure the old 7 client needed a remake, but maybe other platforms would have been a better choise.

Subject: significant performance improvements in 8.5.1

most 8.5.1 beta users are now finding the performance very usable.

Subject: How about a significant UI improvement?

  • I’d prefer a decent UI in DDE as much as performance. For instance, tooltips that turn off when I tell them to. Custom properties consistently appearing in controls. A detached Properties tab that is useful as a narrow pane, ie, the content flows to match the window instead of putting in scroll bars, or forcing the developer to have 1024 pixel wide detached pane. For that matter everything that’s detached should flow, conforming to the developer. Application properties that presented consistently. Errors appear without restarting DDE. Font sizes that are actually changable to match the user’s concept of legibility, preferably on a pane-by-pane basis. Eclipse Perspectives that show up directly as a menu under Perspectives, instead of loading some goofy dialog to switch, and Perspectives that selectively appear as icons on the workspace like they aught to. Consistent application of mouse hot-tracking - some panes the scroll wheel will scroll the content just by having the mouse cursor in it, while others one must click in the pane to scroll. Errors in script behind non-refreshed elements should throw an error if they are going to prevent a Pager from working on a partial refresh. Consistent presentation of help. Event/Problems/Properties tabs that remain consistently instead of magically vanishing from time to time. Click on Properties/Problems/Events causes that pane to open to the size it was when minimized, like Eclipse, instead of consuming the entire DDE window. Clicking “Root Document” in the Outline pane actually does something instead of remaining at the previously selected Outline entry, even though “Root Document” is highlighted. The list goes on and on and on.

Subject: And I will welcome myself aboard…

I was simply flabbergasted when I tried the designer on 8.5…I’m hanging in there until 8.5.1, but really, it’s an embarrassment how slow and awful that thing is. And I’m an ADMIN! I don’t have to work in it every day, but just creating a simple agent in that thing makes me want to find another line of work!

Subject: Agree too

…and it also regularly crashes my client, hogs the focus and is generally annoying!

Subject: I think the move to Eclipse was a good one

  • I simply (and thoroughly) believe the implementation of that move couldn’t have been more bollixed if done by Congress. The U.S. Congress, for those of you who live elsewhere. (wink)- I use Eclipse exclusively for non-Domino Java work, and it’s a real treat. DDE SHOULD be equally favorable, instead of a nightmare. I harped on Lotus for years to use Eclipse … just goes to show one should be careful what they wish for.
