DB Size Mystery

I have a db (ODS 43) that was originally created on an R7 server. The server was recently migrated to R8.01. The db has ~8K documents and is 21GB, all with attachments. The attachments are 20MB-400MB. The database is 21GB. The database was replicated to a newly created R8.01 server and the DB size has grown from 21GB to 35GB. The advanced properties option on both replicas has LZ1 Compression enabled.

What would cause this growth? The document count is the same in both replicas.

Subject: ODS 48

Rupert’s answer is the most likely cause of the size discrepancy, but remember that upgrading to ODS 48 will allow you to take advantage of design- and data-note compression.

Using document body compression

Use the advanced database property “Compress document data” to reduce the total cost of ownership of maintaining any IBM® Lotus® Notes® database by compressing non-summary item data in all documents in a selected database. Document compression can provide up to a sixty percent size saving.

Since your database size is mostly attachments and not “non summary” data the new compression tools in ODS48 won’t help much on this particular database.
