Date time, AM and PM default values

I noticed when a I enter 11:00 into a date time field and compute the document the field value defaults to 11:00 AM.

The same (defaulting to “AM”) seems to be true for all time values, except for 12:00, which defaults to 12:00 PM.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what is controls it ?

Thanks

Do you have any formulas, script, etc. setting or validating this field’s value?

By definition, 12:00 PM is noon. Most people would be entering times as noon rather than midnight, so it’s better to default to 12:00 PM than 12:00 AM.

That’s true. But the same can be said for 1 AM, 2 AM, 3 AM, etc.

This isn’t just an academic question, the users are lazy and want to omit AM or PM designations in the time date fields. The fact that the afternoon times default to “AM” is causing the strife. You know how it is !

Well, you could use an inout translation formula to move anything earlier than, say, 7:30 AM ahead twelve hours. That’ll cause problems for people who need to enter off-hour times, at which point you can point them to the lazies and say “there’s your problem”.

It looks to be working consistent - it’s assuming the smallest time starting from the second hour of the day: 1 AM.

The american clock is a bit wierd:

First you have 1 AM - 11 AM, then suddenly 12 PM, then 1 PM - 11 PM, and then again 12 AM. So the 12 PM and 12 AM are kinda out of order (they should be swapped, and even then it would be wierd, because 12 PM would be as if it was the 25th hour of the day. So I would recommend to fix it that you have 0-11 AM and then 0-11 PM, if you want to insist on the AM/PM notation), but that’s how the americans have agreed with it.

In Europe it’s much easier: just 0-23.
