Hi,
I have read on this forum about looking at the Log.nsf to get database usage so can determine dbs that could be deactivated. The thing with our log is it only shows the last 8 days. And there are no counts of the activities for each database. I am looking at the Usage-By Database view.
My questions are: 1)can I set it to capture activities for 30 days or maybe 6 months - and how would I do that? 2)What would be pros and cons of setting for several days? 3)Is there another view in the Log.nsf to use or another tool available that also gives good break down of database usage.
Thanks for any help on this matter.

Subject: Database Usage
The amount of time your log.nsf database covers is governed by the last time the notes server is shut down and the log file is renamed. If there is no “Log.nsf” db when the server is brought back up then it creates a brand new one. This is a typical way that the notes server is set up with some kind of script that does this automatically. Speak to your notes administrator to see if the log file is saved off somewhere. (Log.nsf can grow to be huge and this is one of the several reasons to reboot the servers on a weekly basis)
Each notes database has properties that go back. File->Application->Properties->Second tab->User Detail button.
The only problem is that it only stores x-amount of information. If there’s a LOT of usage of the database, then there might only be a day’s worth of information there.
Then again, if the database isn’t being used (and there’s no automated background agents keeping it busy) then you’ll see stuff that dates back for months. This information details adds/changes/deletions by users and servers though don’t take the information as completely accurate because this area sometimes doesn’t record every event faithfully in busy databases.
Again, if you see little activity here and it dates back months, then you may have a db that’s a candidate for retirement. (My first step is to reduce access in the ACL to everyone else but me and the server to nothing. See who screams.)
