Hi
I have an old archived .nsf file and would like to know the way to access it with the current id.
Please note that my Notes id’s are different from now and then.
I did try to access the old .nsf from the Notes Workspace and it throws me a message “This database has local access protection and you are not authorized to access it”
Please let me know if there is a way to unlock this old database of mine.
Thanks

Locally - NO. There is no way to bypass local security.
If You have a server - maybe. You must have Full Access Admin rights on the server for this to work:
Place the database on the server,
In the admin-client, use the “Full Access Administration” found in the “Administration” menu.
Now You should be able to change the ACL of the database - set the -Default- to “Manager” - or add Your current name as manager.

I have to disagree, if the database is not encrypted.
The ACL in local databases is subject to hacking through a hex-editor, with which you could change the default access to Manager (for example).
Local, unencrypted databases are not secure.

Ah… of course - how could I forget the basic Hex-hacking!
It must be that I’ve so used to have ALL my local databases encrypted - always… So I tend to forget that there is another option…

It’s enforced here at IBM. There’s a WorkStation Checking tool we run to ensure that laptop password are set, etc, and one of the items looked for is local databases that are not encrypted. (Other than Names.nsf ond the others that should not be)

A tool for checking that… wow - is that tool available for purchase or opensource? That is definitly something all companies should have.

Not that I’m aware of - but it’s called Workstation Security Tool if you want to make further inquirers.

This is the only way I’ve found to do it as well, copy the DB to the server, open up the Admin client, turn on Full Access and then copy the database again to remove the encryption.

From the message - it is sure that the database is encrypted. There is no publicly known way to access the data because it uses Notes’ native encrpytion which is quite good (best???)
suggest you comb through your archive cd’s for a copy of your id file.
