Database Corruption On RAID Drive Failure

Background:Servers: Dell PE2850 with PERC 4/DC Controller

Enclosure: Dell PowerVault 220s with 14 - 36GB Drives

Configuration: PV is configured in split-bus (split channel) mode. RAID 5 Drive spans the 2 channels

Domino: Data directory is on the RAID 5 drive described above.

Server A has experiences 2 drive failures in the last 2 months. Each time Domino Databases have experienced corruption. Sometimes fixup takes care of it, other times, I have to replace the db from a replica. Server B hasn’t had a drive failure but we did find some errors reported in the event log. Preventitive drive replacements have been done. Taking the drive offline with the manager resulted in the same kind of corruption that Server A had.

I’m working with Dell and a consultant to try and find a fix but I want to see if any other admins have any suggestions or experiences with Domino running on a Powervault. Any experiences with split-bus (2 cables, 2 channels) versus joined bus (one cable, one channel)?

I welcome any comments and suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Database Corruption On RAID Drive Failure

Hello,Have never used Dell servers, however I have had the same issue (more than once) on IBM xSeries servers. A single disk failure with the disk not being replaced quickly has caused corruption in Notes databases. I have never got to the bottom of it but put it down to a particular type of IBM Raid Controller (ServeRaid4i if I recall). IBM Raid controllers are made by Adaptec (I think, but some correct me!!), I wonder if Dell are also made by Adaptec.

Thanks for your response.

Dell uses LSI controllers.

My corruption occurs within moments of the drive failure.

I’ve experienced some issues with Dell Powervaults in the past. I don’t think it’s appropriate to post hardware reviews to this forum, but if drop me an e-mail at natewray at gmail and I’ll be happy to share my stories.
