Daos

In our environment we have three mail servers clustered. I have DAOS enabled on one server. I have enabled a few databases to test the functionality and it seems to be working well on that server. When I look at the files on the DAOS enabled server i see that the logical size and physical size is different. All is good. But when I look at the other two servers I see that the physical and logical size is the same and there is no DAOS information.

Must I enable DAOS on all three servers in the cluster. Do the attachments have to be stored three times on all three servers? I would think that I would have to enable DAOS on one and the attachments would be stored there and the attachment empty database would be replicated back to the other two servers.

What am I doing wrong.

Subject: Can I use one file path for storage

Thanks for all the responses.

Another question. We bought up the third mail server in the cluster because one of the servers is running on 10 year old equipment, file space is running out and we need to offload to the new server before it fails. The storage space of the second server is quickly running out also.

I was hoping to offload all attachments to the new server which has adequate space in order to prolong the disk space of the other two servers.

When I enable DAOS in the other two servers in the cluster can I designate the same file path in the server document to point to one location for all three. Will that work?

Subject: DAOS

You can’t offload the attachments no, each server will store all information as it’s always been with Domino clustering

However if you enable DAOS on the servers running out of space you should get some space back as the attachments will only be stored once

Subject: Nothing is wrong…

You aren’t doing anything wrong. Currently IBM did not design the DAOS store to be a global domain sort of thing, it’s per server. So if you have a DAOS enabled db on Server A and replicate that database to Server B, the attachments get copied from the DAOS store to the replicated copy of the database on Server B. Same is true if you replicate the DAOS enabled db to your local, the attachments are put back. DAOS is an interesting topic, it’s not perfect yet, but it does have it’s advantages.

Restore Gotcha’s:

Another heads up, if you ever have to restore a DAOS enabled mail file, it can get tricky, especially if you only need to get back one email for a user. If the email the user needs has an attachment, you can’t restore the db to an alternate location and just copy and paste that one email. You have to restore the db to a path relative to the data directory, so like X:\Lotus\Domino\Data\Restores, this is the only way the restored copy can see the DASO catalog and store…like I said, it’s not perfect.

Other DASO Stuff:

Another thing that is annoying with DAOS is the catalog gets out of sync easily, one database can make the whole thing go to needs synchronized. I setup a server program to run every night to resync. It works well, if it’s already synced it skips the task, but it’s a good idea, otherwise the pruning of old items never happens and your space saver becomes your space user.

Subject: DAOS is installed on every server

DAOS has to be installed on each server separately.

Subject: DAOS is server dependent and daos info. doesn’t replicate

Hi,You have to enable DAOS on every server if u want the feature. You can not use the DAOS data of one server on another server also.

I suggest to go through the FAQs first.
